چکیده

We give a fully polynomial time approximation scheme (FPTAS) for the optimum fractional solution to the Steiner forest problem. This can easily be generalized to obtain an FPTAS for a hitting set problem on a collection of clutters. We also identify three other problems on collections of clutters and show how these four problems are related when the clutters have the max-flow min-cut (MFMC) property. Two of these problems which are generalizations of maximum multicommodity flow and maximum concurrent flow have been well studied in the past and this paper is the first attempt at designing efficient algorithms for the other two problems. Our algorithms are very simple to describe and have running times better than those of existing algorithms. For clutters that do not satisfy the MFMC property (e.g., kspanner, multicommodity flows, T -cuts, T -joins etc.), our algorithms are the only ones known (other than the generic algorithms for linear programming) for solving these hitting set problems.

Near-Optimal Online Algorithms for Prize-Collecting Steiner Problems

In this paper, we give the first online algorithms with a polylogarithmic competitive ratio for the node-weighted prize-collecting Steiner tree and Steiner forest problems. The competitive ratios are optimal up to logarithmic factors. In fact, we give a generic technique for reducing online prize-collecting Steiner problems to the fractional version of their non-prize-collecting counterparts lo...

A Fast Approximation Scheme for Fractional Covering Problems with Box Constraints∗

We present the first combinatorial approximation scheme that yields a pure approximation guarantee for linear programs that are either covering problems with upper bounds on variables, or their duals. Existing approximation schemes for mixed covering and packing problems do not simultaneously satisfy packing and covering constraints exactly. We present the first combinatorial approximation sche...

Strict Cost Sharing Schemes for Steiner Forest

Gupta et al. [J. ACM, 54 (2007), article 11] and Gupta, Kumar, and Roughgarden [in Proceedings of the ACM Symposium on Theory of Computing, ACM, New York, 2003, pp. 365– 372] recently developed an elegant framework for the development of randomized approximation algorithms for rent-or-buy network design problems. The essential building block of this framework is an approximation algorithm for t...

Set Covering and Network Optimization: Dynamic and Approximation Algorithms

In this short note we summarize our results on development and analysis of approximation and dynamic algorithms for set covering and network optimization problems. The results include probabilistic analysis of set covering algorithms, development and analysis of dynamic algorithms for graph optimization problems, game-theoretic analysis of a file-sharing network model, and approximation algorit...

Fast Approximation in Subspaces by Doubling Metric Decomposition

In this paper we propose and study a new complexity model for approximation algorithms. The main motivation are practical problems over large data sets that need to be solved many times for different scenarios, e.g., many multicast trees that need to be constructed for different groups of users. In our model we allow a preprocessing phase, when some information of the input graph G = (V,E) is s...
